In Lower Austria, the June temperature record was broken on Wednesday at 36.7 degrees.
Vienna weather in detail
Just before the end of the month, the June temperature record for this year, set ten days ago in Vorarlberg, was once again surpassed today (Wednesday) at the ZAMG weather station in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in Lower Austria with 36.7 degrees. However, the values were away from the June record. Thus, it remains at the 38.6 degrees, measured on June 20, 2013, in Waidhofen/Ybbs, also in Lower Austria.
Major temperature records between east and west
Overall, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) registered significant differences between western and eastern Austria. In Lower Austria, Vienna, and Burgenland, it was around 35 degrees in places, while further west, it was mostly only between 20 and 26 degrees. A look at the maximum values (as of 16:50) shows after Deutsch-Altenburg, in each case measuring points from the east, from Gänserndorf to Neusiedl am See, which still reached values beyond 35 degrees, Vienna-Innere Stadt registered 34.8 degrees. Were it on Monday still over 190 measuring stations with at least 30 degrees or above, their number reduced to up-to-date and just over 60.
Previous June temperature record with 36.5 degrees
Ten days ago, on Sunday, June 19, temperatures in Austria approached the respective state records for June for the first time. And in Vorarlberg, the previous description was surpassed: 36.5 degrees was hot at 15.00 in Feldkirch. The provincial records for June remained unchanged, with 36.5 degrees in Vorarlberg and 38.6 degrees in Lower Austria (Waidhofen/Ybbs 2013).
Heat and enormous storms cause severe damage
The storms resulting from the extreme temperatures have repeatedly caused severe damage throughout Austria throughout the month. Then, in the night to Wednesday, the Villach area was a center of weather extremes. A man was also killed in a mudslide in Treffen. In addition to Carinthia, the Lungau region of Salzburg was also severely affected. In Tamsweg, a civil defense alert was issued on Wednesday morning due to flooding, but the situation eased again during the day.
